The Institute of Archaeology started its activity on 1948 with the foundation of the Archaeological Museum in Tirana and of the Archaeological Department on 1957. These two units formed in 1976, the Archaeological Research Centre within the Academy of Sciences. In 1991 this centre was transformed into the Institute of Archaeology.
The goals of activity of the Institute are the research, study and excavation of the archaeological resource throughout the Albanian territory, as well as the administration of the archaeological museums in Tirana, Durres, Apolonia, Butrint, Korce and their archives.
Organization
The basic units of the scientific research activity of the Institute of Archaeology are the Departments of Prehistory, Classical Antiquity and Late Antiquity and Middle Age. They are assisted by several archaeological regional offices located in some districts of the country. The Institute also has its library, scientific archive, numismatic cabinet, museums and archaeological funds in Tirana, Durres, Apolonia, Butrint and Korce.
