The Center for Art Studies was established in 1984 as an institution of the Academy of Sciences of Albania.
From the outset the Center for Art Studies was a multidisciplinary research center.
Research is focused on:
Fine Arts
Music
Choreography
Theater
Cinema
Institutions of Art and Culture.
Fields of research are: the history of arts from the beginnings to the present and theoretical and methodological studies. Studies of theoretical and methodological problems were the main line of research up to 1993, and afterwards there was a shift on to researches concerning mainly the history of Albanian arts and art institutions. In the above-mentioned fields the Center for Art Studies is the only research institution in the structure of the Academy of Sciences.
Its research activity is closely connected with that of institutions outside the Academy, such as the Academy of Arts, a university-level institution, the Gallery of Fine Arts in Tirana, the State Film Archive, etc. Members of the Center's research staff are regular lecturers of universities in Tirana.
At present the work of the Center is concentrated on monographic studies supporting larger works, such as a history of Albanian fine arts and a history of theatre and cinema, to be carried in the near future. Part of its work is arts' section in the Albanian Encyclopedic Dictionary, a collective undertaking of basic importance.
In January 2001 the Center for Art Studies employed 10 persons, 8 of them doing actual research and studies and the rest 2 in the technical and administrative staff. Among the researchers, 3 are professors, 2 are doctors, 3 are young researchers.
The Center for Art Studies is headed by the Director; a Research Board, composed both of professors and doctors within the Center and prominent researchers outside the Center, is responsible for the research projects, decision-making on research matters, and the publications plan.
