GSC is created as an independent institution by governmental resolution on 1986. Its origin is on the sector of the studies about Physical Geography of Albania created on 1972 under the administration of Geography Chair near the faculty of History and Philology. The sector of geography remained within this institution until 1979, when it was separated by the Faculty of History and Philology and passed in the system of Academy of Sciences of the republic of Albania, under of the administration of Hydrometeorology Institution.
On the 1986, after the governmental resolution, the sector of physical geography of Albania, was transformed in Geographic Studies Center and it is an independent institution in the system of Academy of Sciences.
On 1972, the sector of geography had only 2 scientific cooperators, that were occupied with study problems of physical geography of Albania.
When this sector passed in the constitution of Hydrometeorologic Institute, it was composed by 4 scientific cooperators one of whom was nominated chief of the sector. Later on were nominated 2 other new employees, so the studying problematic was spread in the field of economic geography of Albania as well.
After taking its status the GSC, the number of employees was increased on 13 firstly and
29 (1998). In these conditions, there was not an inner structuring of geography sector. This was the situation until 1986, when GSC was proclaimed independent studying-scientific unit in the composition of the Academy of Sciences. At first, three sectors were created:
- sector of physical geography of Albania
- sector of economic geography of Albania
- sector of cartography
At the same time the administration of the GSC was set up of 4 employees on it.
Until the 1983 the finance of GSC was in composition of Academy finance. After the structuring made to the GSC after 1993 it had its own finance and was set up the
GIS (Geographic Information System) as a special unit within GSC.
At the same time were created the departamentss in the composition of GSC.
After the restructuring many changes occurred:
- It was abolished the sector of economic geography
- It was created a single link with scholars of physical geography and only economic
geography.
- The finance and the administration were included in the sector of geographic information
- It was created the sector of geographic information
In the end of 1997 it was proposed in the Chairmanship of the Academy the new structure of GSC.
It was also aproved:
- Scientific council with 9 members
- Edition council
- The chiefs of the departments
