THE INSTITUTE OF HYDROMETEOROLOGY
Director: Prof. Dr. Mitat Sanxhaku
The Hydrometeorological Institute (HMI) was founded in 1962 ( with the resolution of the Government Nr.172, date 14 May 1962 ), replacing the Hydrometeorological Service that had been created in 1949. Actually, HMI is under the
Academy of Sciences of Albania.
The HMI is a research institute, responsible for the collection , processing and analysis of all meteorological and hydrological data. Its tasks includes reports and studies in the field of meteorology, hydrology and environment. The HMI provides the governmental and public administration , the weather sensitive branches of economy and the society with the hydrometeorological information and studies.
Fields of activity
The Hydrometeorological Institute carries out its activity in three main fields:
Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment.
In the field of Meteorology
- the observation and processing of meteorological parameters;
- climatological and agrometeorological studies based on longterm observations
of meteorological elements;
- short-term forecasting up to 72 hours.
In the field of Hydrology
- the observation and processing of the data on the regime of surface waters, ground
waters , marine waters etc.
- hydrological studies on watershed, regional and national scale.
In the field of Environment:
- the monitoring of air quality;
- the monitoring of water quality.
