This department is composed of four sections.

Section of national meteorological network
Section of Climatology
Section of meteorological forecasting.
Section of Agrometeorology

Section of national meteorological network

The main duties of this section are the control and maintenance of all the meteorological stations; the control of the quality of the meteorological data as well as building of data bank.

In the activity of this section there are included even studies such as, those on the variability of the meteorological elements in time and space, the study on the extraordinary atmospheric events as well as the analysis of the characteristics of weather conditions during the year.

Section of Climatology

Among the tasks of this section are numerous climatological studies based on longterm observations of air temperature, precipitation total, relative humidity, air pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and sunshine duration and various meteorological phenomena which consist in:

the analysis of the time and spatial distribution of climatic characteristics;

the spatial distributions of the frequency and intensity of individual climatic occurrences for the planning of infrastructure facilities;

the assessment of the probability and frequency of dangerous and hazardous climatic phenomena (extremely strong winds, torrential rains, hail, extended droughts and so on);

the evaluation of the potential of wind energy and solar radiation taking into account various geographical features;

the assessment of the possible impact of climate change on the environment, etc.;

The specialists have this scientific activity:

Participation on scientific projects in collaboration with Albanian and foreign institutions;

Scientific papers in Albanian and international journals

participation on scientific national and international activities

Trainings by German Weather Service, METEOFRANCE, Hungarian Metservice, University of Reading, etc.

Possibilities for cooperation:

The assessment of the possible impact of climate change on water resources, agriculture, forestry, natural ecosystems, etc.

Section of meteorological forecasting.

The Section of Weather Forecast provides forecasts intended for users from different weather sensitive branches of economy and for the public.
The forecast range is up to 72 hours. Longer ranges (up to 7 days in advance) can also be provided.
It is mainly used the French numerical model, ARPÈGE/ALADIN, through the satellite based dissemination system, RETIM (METEO-FRANCE). The forecast is updated twice a day.

In the field of weather forecast, the international exchange of data, methodology and experience is a basic condition for qualitative and professional work. The HMI therefore works in collaboration with several European Meteorological Services and is a member of various International Institutions.

For the future it is intended to install a numerical high resolution meteorological model in Tirana and to run it over the territory of Albania.

The providing of forecasts intended for users from different weather sensitive branches of economy and for the public.

Section of Agrometeorology.

The main duties of this section are:

observing, collecting and processing of phenological data;

preparation of agrometeorological technical advices;

studies on the influence of the climatic factors in the process of growth and development of different agricultural plants.
