Department of Flora and Ecology

  1. The study and the generalization in the national level about the plant resources through the expeditions on terrain to enrich and to keep in efficiency the National Herbarium and through the scientific, analytic and generalizing publications.
  2. The studies in the regional or national range of damage level of flora and vegetation in general or in particular zones from different impacts and taking measures for the improvement of the situation and the conservation of the nature in Albania.
  3. The consulting and scientific qualifying activities in the national range about particular problems of identification of spontaneous flora, ecological studying methods, the plant diversity etc.

In this department exists " National Herbarium" with about 130.000 exemplars.

Main results of the department are:

The total identification of Albanian Flora
The partial identification of the vegetation of Albania
The publication of the Regional Floras
The study of the sensitive habitats
The study of the rare and threatened species
The identification of some taxons, new to the science and new Albanian species

Possibilities for cooperation or service:

The forestry improvement
The use of plants with economic value
The plant biodiversity
The human impact on flora and vegetation
The threatened, rare and sensitive plant species and plant habitats.
The vegetation mapping

Composition: 2 ecologists (1 Professor); 2 botanists (Professor Ass.)

Department of Physiology and Microbiology

  1. The use of biotechnological methods on genetic improvement, on preservation and enrichment of germplasms, on fast micropropagation and production of diseases-free plants of some crop and rare spontaneous plants. Creation of National Plant Cell and Tissue Culture Laboratory.
  2. The ecophysiological study of the effect of heavy metals on agricultural crops and on the spontaneous plants. The study of the effect of oxidative stress and heat shock on the different wheat varieties.
  3. Isolation, identification and determination of the characteristics of microorganisms with industrial importance. Enrichment of microorganisms collection by physical mutagenesis.
  4. The consulting and scientific qualifying activities in national level about the problems of the use of new biotechnological methods, about ecophysiological studies and in the field of microbiology.
  5. In this department exists Plant Cells and Tissue Culture Laboratory, that is enriching for the use of biotechnological methods. It also exists a Laboratory of Plant Physiology and the National Collection of nonpatogen microorganisms with importance for food industry.

The most important results are:

The propagation of the fruit and forestry trees (kiwi plant and nuts) by micropropagation.
The production of free- disease plants of potato and carnation by meristem culture.
The use of biotechnological methods on germoplasm preservation of agricultural and sponaneous plants. The establishment of "in vitro" gene bank of spontaneous Albanian plants.
The determination of physiological parameters as the practical criterion in the screening of tolerant wheat varieties to abiotic stresses.
The isolation from autochthon materials, the identification and the characterization of about 600 strains of bacteria, yeasts and fungi. Actually, the collection is composed by 50 yeast strains and about 100 liophylizeted Lactobacillus strains for the use in food industry.

The possibilities for the collaboration and the service exists in these fields:

The rehabilitation of fruit plantations and of forests by micropropagation
The introduction in Albania of valuable plants.
The production of free-diseases seeds, samplings and other sowing materials.
The establishment of seed and "in vitro"gene banks of important spontaneous plants with value in the program of genetic improvement and for medicinal and decorative plants.
The use of yeast and Lactobacillus strains in food industry.
The composition: 3 plant physiologists (2 Professor), 1 microbiologist and 1 chemist

Department of Genetics and Biochemistry

  1. The genetic improvement of different agricultural crops by chemical and physical mutagenesis and by traditional breeding
  2. Genetic studies and analysis of biological diversity on the populations of spontaneous and cultivated flora and fauna of Albania
  3. Cytogenetical study of some endemic and interesting plant species of the spontaneous flora of Albania
  4. Cytological study of the organogenesis on plants growing in normal and “in vitro” culture.
  5. The production of haploid and bihaploid plants by "in vitro" culture of cereals anthers
  6. The study of the effect of abiotic stresses on metabolic pathway (protein and amino acid synthesis) and in the dynamic of initial photosynthesis processes and in their molecular mechanism on the cultivated and spontaneous plants.
  7. The study of the structure of biomolecules and of their interaction

Actually, the department possess the Cytological Laboratory available to carry out the most of cytological and cytogenetical analysis as well the Biochemical and Biophysical Laboratory.

The most important results are:

The creation of new wheat cultivars produced by chemical mutagenesis and genetic transformataion.
The creation of a dwarf Triticum durum line with stable productivity by ionizing irradiation, very interesting form for the future crossing.
Cytogenetical study on some spontaneous plant species in different regions of Albania
Cytological parameteres on some agricultural crops in normal and “in vitro” conditions.
The determination of some biochemical and biophysical parameters as correlative criterion with productivity, quality and resistance of cereals to help the programs of genetic improvement.
Biochemical study of plant genetic resources of Albania
Possibilities for collaboration or service:
Genetic improvement by chemical and physical mutagenesis on cereals, industrial plants, vegetable and decorative plants.
In the field of Plant Cytogenetics for the determination of chromosome numbers, mostly on some endemic or Balkan plant species.
The study of citological parameters on cultivated plants for their certification.
The study of the effect of abiotic stresses for the programs of genetic improvement of cultivated plants.
Biochemical study of plant resources of Albania for nature conservation and for economic development.
Service for biochemical analyses of specific plant compounds.
